  8. Why do I see 2 Wi-Fi networks from my Router?
You are using a dual band router that support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

  9. What is the difference between 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz?

    2.4 GHz
AdvantagesDisadvantages
Able to support most of the network devices.2.4 GHz frequency is more crowded than 5 GHz which causes devices on 2.4 GHz to suffer much more interference than the ones on 5 GHz.
2.4 GHz frequency is able to cover a longer range than 5 Ghz frequency.Wireless speed on 2.4 GHz are further decreased when other devices (cordless phones, microwaves) on this same frequency adds noise to this frequency.

5 GHz

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Lesser interference on 5 GHz frequency when compared to 2.4 GHz frequency.5 GHz frequency has a shorter range when compared to 2.4 GHz frequency.

Wireless clients (subject to equipment’s processor and hardware capability) will get better wireless speed when connected to 5GHz frequency and

when it is within the line of sight to the router.

Older network devices are not capable of using 5Ghz frequency.

10. Tips to improve Wi-Fi connection

  • Peace your wireless router at an elevated and centralised location with minimal obstructions.
  • Refrain from placing router inside a cabinet, TV console, storage spaces and small corners.
  • Avoid stacking the router with other electronic devices as heat dissipated from devices may cause the router to overheat, thus affecting its performance and lifespan.
  • Selecting the least congested Wi-Fi-channel from your router settings as is likely that your neighbours’ Wi-Fi shares the same Wi-Fi channel as you. This causes congestion and interference which reduces your Wi-Fi speed and experience. (You may consider using third-party software like InSSIDer (Windows) or Netspot (Mac) to identify the least congested channel).
  • Do upgrade your router to the latest firmware for optimal performance.
  • Consider rebooting the router once a month to free up your router’s RAM (random access memory) to fix minor performance issues.
