M1 launches Singapore's first public high-definition native WiFi voice calls trial using HetNet technology

SINGAPORE, 29 April 2016 – M1 Limited (M1) today announced the launch of Singapore’s first public native Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) trial with full seamless mobility, through HetNet (Heterogeneous Network) technology.

VoWiFi technology enables the user to make data voice calls using the handset’s native dialler and offers convenient direct access to the device’s contacts list, without the user having to install or use a separate calling app. In addition, M1’s service will allow calls to and from fixed numbers, unlike OTT (over-the-top) calling apps which only allow calls between handsets with the same calling software.

M1 VoWiFi also supports two-way mobility between WiFi and mobile networks. This means that a voice call initiated on a WiFi network will not disconnect when the user moves to cellular network, and vice versa. In this way, customers will enjoy uninterrupted two-direction, high-definition voice calls across M1’s cellular and M1WiFi carrier WiFi networks. Through M1’s smart network prioritisation capabilities, VoWiFi customers will also enjoy quality voice call even during periods of heavy WiFi network usage.

The service is currently available to the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s (IDA) national HetNet Trials initiative users at M1’s WiFi deployment sites within the Jurong Lake District.
