Many modern products and services are designed to make our lives better. Yet, it seems that we’re under more stress than ever before. A reason for this is unrealistic beauty standards, and a desire to conform to them.
Thankfully, there are social movements rising up to promote complete self-acceptance such as the Dove Self-Esteem Project, a body positivity movement that encourages young people around the world to be confident in their own skin. And Lizzo, a huge proponent for body positivity, was recently roped into the Dove campaign.
Lizzo & the Dove Campaign for Body Positivity
Lizzo is an American singer, songwriter, and talented flautist to boot. Throughout her career, she has been an unfortunate target of body shaming. In response, she has risen to become a spokesperson and icon for body positivity and self-confidence, transforming the way beauty is talked about.
As Dove’s brand ambassador for the ‘Selfie Talk’ campaign, Lizzo is working to shift the conversation towards ‘body neutrality’. Taking things a step further from positivity, body neutrality encourages the acceptance of one’s body as it is - even on those days when we don’t love it. This means, among other things, doing away with filters on photos and not falling prey to false affirmations in body-positive statements.
Because of her status as a body-positive icon, Lizzo was perfect for Dove’s ‘Self-Esteem Project’. The campaign is now more than 10 years old and has helped parents, mentors, teachers, and youth leaders to better educate the younger generation about their sense of self. It reached over 20 million youths in 2016, and numbers are only expected to rise. With Lizzo now on board, we believe more will champion true beauty.
